Agartala, 15th July 2026: Women’s Cell of Michael Madhusudhan Datta(MMD) College, Sabroom organized an awareness programme today to address the problems of child marriage and pregnancy. The event was attended by distinguished guests including Dr. Soumik Hazra, Medical Officer of Sabroom Sub-Divisional Hospital, Principal Dr. Anupam Guha, Professor Sangita Hrangkhawl, Convener of the Women’s Cell, faculty members, and students.
During the program, Dr. Soumik Hazra stated that child marriage and pregnancy are deeply interconnected and pose serious risks to the health of mothers and children. He explained that when girls marry before the age of 18, they often become pregnant before reaching physical and mental maturity, leading to increased risks of childbirth complications and infant mortality. Child marriage and early pregnancy are harmful because girls under 18 are not fully physically developed. As a result, they face risks such as anemia, high blood pressure (preeclampsia), and excessive bleeding during delivery. Additionally, pregnancies at an immature age often result in low birth weight, malnutrition, and higher infant mortality rates.
Dr. Anupam Guha emphasized that child marriage causes adolescent girls to drop out of school, destroys their future, and exposes them to domestic and mental violence. He urged the students to focus on their studies and pursue appropriate work at the right time. He also mentioned that various government and non-governmental campaigns, along with legal measures, are in place across Tripura and other parts of India to prevent child marriage and protect girls.
Additionally, the event featured speeches by Dr. Uma Begum, while Professor Sangita Hrangkhawl and Dr. Tapan Shil delivered welcoming and concluding remarks. The program concluded with a pledge to prevent child marriage.
