Agartala, 31st July 2026 : North Tripura has recorded the highest rate of self-enumeration in Tripura ahead of the first phase of Census 2027, with more than 12,000 households completing the digital exercise during the month-long window that ended on Friday.
Addressing a press conference, North Tripura District Magistrate and Collector and Principal Census Officer Chandni Chandran said around 110,000 households are estimated to be present in the district, of which over 12,000 had completed self-enumeration—more than 10 per cent of the total.
“North Tripura District has achieved the highest percentage of self-enumeration in the entire state,” Chandran said. She noted that the corresponding rate in several other districts was around or below five per cent.
The DM credited the achievement to the cooperation of residents, media organisations and census officials in spreading awareness about the digital process.
She said North Tripura was fully prepared to begin the House Listing and Housing Operations (HLO), the first phase of Census 2027, from August 1. The house-listing exercise will continue until August 30, while Population Enumeration is scheduled for February 2027.
Census 2027 will be India’s 16th census and the first to be conducted entirely through digital technology.
According to Chandran, the district has deployed 864 enumerators and 180 supervisors, including a 10 per cent reserve in both categories. All personnel have been registered on the Census CMMS portal and provided with appointment letters, identity cards and other required materials. GIS mapping and geo-tagging of house-listing blocks have also been completed.
Appealing for public cooperation, Chandran urged residents to respond patiently to the 33 questions that enumerators will ask during their visits. She also stressed the importance of checking the official identity card of every census worker before sharing any information.
Addressing concerns regarding the use of census data, she clarified that the exercise has no connection with income tax assessment. “If you look at the 33 questions, you will realize there are absolutely no questions regarding your job or your income,” she said.
She explained that the questions primarily concern housing and household facilities, including the condition of the floor, walls and roof, number of rooms, kitchen and drinking-water facilities, ownership status and certain household assets such as laptops and televisions. Details such as the house number, name of the head of household and number of married couples may also be recorded.
“There are no personal questions,” Chandran said, adding that residents would not have to produce Aadhaar, PAN cards or any other documents during the house-listing exercise.
“No documents need to be shown. Aadhaar, PAN—nothing needs to be shown,” she clarified.
The DM further warned residents against sharing information with anyone claiming to be a census enumerator without producing valid identification.
“Every census enumerator carries an identity card, which you can verify. Do not provide information to random individuals who simply claim to be enumerators without showing their ID cards,” she said.
Chandran called upon the people of North Tripura to extend full cooperation to enumerators and supervisors throughout the August 1–30 exercise, stressing that active public participation would be essential for the smooth and successful completion of the first phase of the digital census.
