Agartala, 15th June 2026 : Frustration among daily rail commuters boiled over on Monday morning as hundreds of passengers protested severe overcrowding on the Agartala–Karimganj passenger service, resulting in a rail blockade at Jirania railway station.
The Agartala–Karimganj passenger train (No. 75679) departed from Agartala at approximately 7:20 a.m. with only five coaches. According to passengers, the train was heavily overcrowded from the very beginning of its journey, leaving many travelers without adequate space inside the compartments.
As the train stopped at stations such as Badharghat and Jogendranagar, numerous passengers holding valid tickets were unable to board due to the excessive crowd. The situation reached a flashpoint at Jirania station, where a large number of waiting commuters found themselves stranded as the train had no room to accommodate additional passengers.
In protest against what they termed a persistent failure by railway authorities to address the issue, agitated passengers blocked railway tracks at Jirania station. The demonstration brought the Agartala–Karimganj passenger train to a standstill and also affected the Dharmanagar–Agartala passenger service, disrupting rail traffic on the route.
Following the blockade, police and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel arrived at the station to restore order and engage with the protesters.
The disruption caused significant inconvenience to daily commuters, particularly government employees and office-goers who rely on the rail service for regular travel.
Protesters accused railway authorities of ignoring repeated complaints regarding overcrowding and inadequate coach availability. They demanded that additional coaches be attached to the train to accommodate the growing number of passengers and prevent similar incidents in the future.
At the time of filing this report, around 10:10 a.m., both passenger trains remained halted at Jirania station, with demonstrators maintaining the blockade and insisting that it would continue until their demands were met.
