Agartala, 5th June 2025 :  Marking World Environment Day, the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee on Thursday called for a complete ban on flex printing and single-use plastics across the state, warning of their severe impact on both public health and the environment.

To commemorate the day, the Congress organized a public awareness event in Agartala, where party leaders highlighted the growing dangers of plastic pollution and criticized both government inaction and public indifference.

Addressing the gathering, senior Congress leader and former minister Sudip Roy Barman said the widespread use of plastics—from food packaging to water bottles—was exacerbating ecological damage and fueling health crises.

“Most of our daily-use items are wrapped in plastic. This not only contaminates our food and water but is also linked to diseases like cancer. Plastic bottles are clogging drains, worsening urban flooding, and hindering groundwater recharge. If we continue like this, we are digging our own graves,” Barman warned.

He also raised concerns over alleged conflicts of interest within the government, which, he said, have obstructed stricter environmental regulations.

“If ministers themselves are involved in the flex printing business, how can we expect any ban to be enforced? Still, we urge citizens to voluntarily stop using flex banners, plastic water bottles, disposable plates, glasses, and tea cups. Change must begin with us,” he added.

Tripura Congress president Asish Kumar Saha echoed these concerns and called for collective responsibility to combat plastic waste.
