Agartala, 23rd April 2026: The Tripura Pradesh Congress has launched a sharp attack on the Central government’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, alleging that the legislation poses a grave threat to India’s democratic framework, press freedom, and citizens’ right to information.
In a press statement, party spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty accused the ruling BJP and its ideological ally RSS of attempting to establish monopolistic control over constitutional institutions. He claimed that the government has linked delimitation and the proposed increase in Lok Sabha seats with the women’s reservation issue to mislead the public.
Chakraborty argued that the DPDP Act effectively reduces transparency by legitimizing a “right to withhold information,” thereby undermining the efficacy of the Right to Information and weakening administrative accountability. He warned that the law would particularly restrict the media, as journalists would face mandatory consent requirements before publishing personal information, creating significant barriers to reporting in the public interest.
The statement further highlighted provisions for heavy financial penalties, which Congress said could impose crippling burdens on individuals and institutions. It also raised concerns about complications in disclosing the identities of accused persons, potentially shielding influential and corrupt groups.
Calling the law a tool to protect vested interests, the Pradesh Congress urged the media and all democratic-minded citizens to unite against it. The party vowed to intensify democratic movements to compel the Centre to withdraw the legislation.
