Agartala, 22nd May 2025: Tripura Police, in coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF), detained 16 Bangladeshi nationals from different locations across the state on Thursday for allegedly entering Indian territory illegally.
In the Mohanpur subdivision of West Tripura district, BSF personnel posted at the Manu Border Outpost apprehended nine Bangladeshi nationals, including two children and two transgenders. Officer-in-Charge of Mohanpur Police Station, Mangesh Patari, confirmed the development.
“They were found to have crossed the international border illegally and admitted to being Bangladeshi nationals. We have produced them before the court. The detained individuals have been identified as Santosh Mallick, Elona Mallick, Dipul Sarkar, Sajal Sarkar, Pari Pal, Ritwika Pal, and Ruma Pal,” said Patari. An investigation is underway.
In a separate incident earlier in the day, five Bangladeshi nationals were detained by Madhupur Police in Sepahijala district following a tip-off. According to Debajit Chatterjee, Officer-in-Charge of Madhupur Police Station, the arrests were made near a village close to the India-Bangladesh border with assistance from local residents.
“We received credible input and launched an operation in the early hours. The detainees were brought in for questioning. A case has been registered, and they will be produced before the court,” Chatterjee said. He added that all five are from Kurigram district in Bangladesh and belong to the same family. During initial interrogation, one of the detainees, Shahjala Khan, revealed that they were helped by an unidentified person to cross the border and were on their way to Delhi. The other detainees have been identified as Manir Khan, Saheba Khatun, Swadhin Khan, and Dulali Khatun.
In another development, two more suspected Bangladeshi nationals were held in Belonia under South Tripura district. They were identified as Prantosh Chandra Sutradhar and Subha Das.
“We apprehended them from a stadium area and have already produced them before the court. We are seeking police remand for further investigation,” a police officer said. Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the motive and network behind these illegal crossings.
