Agartala, 6th August 2025 : Tripura Police has launched an investigation after an indigenous woman was allegedly molested inside a bus, triggering violent protests in Bishramganj area of Sepahijala district.
In retaliation, angry locals vandalized the bus and several other vehicles, prompting police intervention.
Following the unrest, bus operators have suspended services indefinitely along the Agartala-Sonamura route—covering parts of Sepahijala and West Tripura districts—demanding a thorough and impartial probe into the incident.
According to police sources, the alleged incident occurred while the tribal woman was travelling from Agartala to Master Para in Bishramganj. She reportedly alerted her relatives via phone from inside the bus. Upon the vehicle’s arrival in Bishramganj, her enraged family members and local residents allegedly attacked and damaged the bus, escalating tensions in the area.
Senior officials, including Inspector General (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper and Sepahijala Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma, along with personnel from Bishramganj and Bishalgarh Police Stations and Tripura State Rifles (TSR), rushed to the spot to restore order. Authorities also invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to maintain law and order.
“We have not identified the accused yet. The situation is currently under control. A detailed investigation is underway,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity.
Reacting to the incident, Tipra Motha Party founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma issued a statement condemning both the alleged assault and the violent reaction that followed.
“What happened in Bishramganj last night is deeply concerning. This is not about tribal versus non-tribal—it is about a woman’s dignity being violated, and that must be condemned by all,” Pradyot said. “However, taking the law into one’s own hands is not acceptable. I’ve spoken to the victim and her mother, assuring them full support. I also discussed the matter with the Director General of Police, who assured me that justice will be served. I appeal to everyone to maintain peace. Violence only deepens divisions—it never solves anything.”
