Agartala, 28th May 2025: :In a significant breakthrough in its ongoing anti-narcotics campaign, the Amtali Police Station under West Tripura district achieved a major success on Wednesday after intercepting a vehicle loaded with a massive consignment of dried cannabis worth Rs 10 lakh
Acting on a tip-off received early in the morning, Sub-Inspector Hiren Debbarma led a team of police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel to lay a trap near the Agartala-Sabroom National Highway, adjacent to Badharghat BOC. The operation was launched based on credible intelligence that a Maruti Suzuki car carrying illegal narcotics would pass through the route.
As the suspect vehicle approached the checkpoint, it attempted to evade capture and sped away. A dramatic chase ensued, ending only when the fleeing Maruti car collided with another vehicle near ONGC First Gate. The police team managed to arrest the driver, identified as Rishabh Nama, at the spot.
Upon searching the car, officers recovered 90 kilograms of dried ganja packed in five bags. The narcotics, which have an estimated market value of over Rs 10 lakh, were seized and brought to the Amtali Police Station.
According to the police, the arrested driver is a resident of Devipur, under the jurisdiction of Madhupur Police Station. Preliminary investigation suggests that the consignment was being transported from Agartala to Madhupur.
An NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) case has been registered, and the accused is currently undergoing intensive interrogation. Amtali Police Station’s Second Officer Mrinal Kanti Pal, while briefing the media on Wednesday afternoon, confirmed that the accused would be produced in court the same day with a plea for police remand.
“We believe that detailed interrogation during remand will help us uncover the full network involved in this smuggling racket,” said Mr. Pal, adding that the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are likely.
