Agartala, 5th October 2025 : The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) has accused the BJP-led central and state governments of systematically advancing the “Manu Samhita” (Manu Philosophy) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which the party claims undermines women’s rights and dignity.
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan here today, PCC spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty alleged that over the past 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule, incidents across the country and the state have revealed a “deceitful and regressive attitude” towards women. Citing data from the RBI, NITI Aayog, and international agencies, Chakraborty claimed that 57 percent of women and 52 percent of children in India suffer from malnutrition, with Tripura’s figures even higher at 66 and 62 percent respectively.
He referred to a recent tragic case in Karbook, where a tribal mother reportedly sold her infant due to extreme poverty, as evidence of worsening socio-economic conditions.
Quoting the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Chakraborty stated that crimes against women have risen by 28 percent under the BJP government compared to the UPA era, with at least 88 serious offences—including rape and murder—occurring daily across the country. Tripura, he said, ranks among the top northeastern states in crimes against women and drug abuse.
He also cited the National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, appointed by the Modi government, who acknowledged that women’s safety concerns extend beyond law and order, impacting education, employment, and mobility.
The Congress spokesperson further alleged large-scale misuse of funds under the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ scheme, claiming that 80 percent of the budget was spent on advertisements. He added that only 4.37 percent of posts under the government’s promised 33 percent reservation for women in paramilitary forces have been filled.
In light of these findings, the TPCC demanded: Swift legal action and fair trials in all cases of violence against women, irrespective of the accused’s political connections; Immediate crackdown on the state’s drug trade and confiscation of illegal assets of those involved; Equal pay for equal work and wage hikes for scheme workers such as ASHA and mid-day meal employees; and A government-led survey to identify distressed microfinance borrowers, followed by loan waivers and access to low-interest credit through nationalized banks.
Chakraborty called upon women across Tripura to unite under the Mahila Congress to launch a state-wide movement for women’s safety, dignity, and economic security.
