Protest erupts over pump operator appointment at Kamalasagar

Agartala, 23rd May 2025:   Residents of the 26 Card area of Kamalasagar assembly constituency staged a protest this morning locking the newly installed water pump indefinitely. The demonstration was sparked by allegations that the local MLA and the Kamalasagar Mandal president awarded the position of pump operator to an individual from another ward in exchange for a large sum of money.

For months, the residents, who live in a hilly terrain with scarce water resources, had been demanding the installation of a water pump. After prolonged efforts, a pump was installed a few months ago, and community leaders agreed that an unemployed youth from Ward No. 4 would be assigned to operate it. However, locals allege that contrary to the agreement, the job was given to Amaresh Sarkar, the son of the former panchayat Pradhan from Ward No. 2.

Expressing their frustration, a protesting resident stated, “We were promised that the job would go to someone from our ward. Instead, they gave it to someone else by taking money. We will not allow him to enter the pump until our demand is met.”

The protest has intensified political scrutiny of the area’s MLA, with locals accusing her of making unilateral decisions without consulting residents. One protestor remarked, “She does whatever she pleases. People are growing frustrated with her and the party.”
