Agartala, 31st December 2024: Former Chief Minister and Politburo member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Manik Sarkar, faced intense public anger today during the fourth district conference of the CPI(M) North District held at the Vivekananda Shatabarshiki Bhavan.
The event, attended by party stalwarts including Aghor Debbarma and Pabitra Kar, was disrupted by a protest spearheaded by women demanding the return of their lost money in the Rose Valley scam.
The day began with CPI(M) member Aghor Debbarma hoisting the party flag and initiating the district conference as per schedule. However, the gathering inside the venue quickly drew public ire as a large group of women marched through various streets of Dharmanagar, chanting slogans like “We are poor! We want Rose Valley’s money back!” before converging at the venue.
The protesters, blocked by a police barricade at the entrance, staged a demonstration outside, voicing their frustrations against the CPI(M) leadership, particularly Manik Sarkar.
Many protesters held the former Left Front government accountable for their financial losses in the Rose Valley scam, which saw millions of rupees vanish through fraudulent schemes promising lucrative returns.
Rose Valley, a major chit fund company, operated across several states, including Tripura, West Bengal, and Assam, duping countless depositors with misleading projects. The collapse of the company left depositors grappling with financial ruin. Allegations of political complicity, including scrutiny of CPI(M) leaders and a minister from the former Left Front government, have kept the scam in the public eye.
Speaking to the press, one protester said, “We are poor, hardworking people. Our money was stolen, and the government then did nothing to help us. We want the leaders who were in power to take responsibility and return our money.”
