Residents allege civic services collapsed at Sabroom Nagar Panchayat

Date:

Agartala, 27th July 2026 :   Residents of Sabroom town in South Tripura have alleged that civic amenities under the Sabroom Nagar Panchayat have deteriorated sharply, despite repeated claims by the ruling party that the border town is emerging as the “gateway to Northeast India” with rapid development.

People from several wards complain that basic services, including road maintenance, drainage, street lighting, sanitation and drinking water supply, remain in a poor state. They allege that many roads have become severely damaged, while concrete drains on both sides are clogged with weeds and garbage, preventing proper water flow. During even light rainfall, sewage reportedly overflows onto roads, and waterlogging has become a recurring problem in areas such as the road connecting Anandapara near Sabroom Sub-divisional Hospital to Thakur Palli.

Residents also expressed concern over non-functional streetlights across several localities. Students, particularly those from remote tribal areas who travel to Sabroom for education, reportedly face difficulties returning home after sunset as many stretches remain in darkness, forcing pedestrians to rely on mobile phone flashlights.

Locals further alleged that inadequate maintenance under the urban employment programme has allowed roadside vegetation and drains to remain neglected. They claimed that mosquito breeding has increased due to the absence of regular anti-larval measures and sanitation drives.

Irregular drinking water supply has added to residents’ frustration, with many saying there is no fixed schedule for water distribution. While residents continue to pay municipal taxes regularly, they questioned why essential civic services have not improved.

Citizens have urged the Sabroom Nagar Panchayat and the district administration to immediately address the deteriorating infrastructure, improve sanitation, restore streetlights, ensure regular water supply and strengthen maintenance work to provide the level of civic services expected in one of Tripura’s most strategically important towns.
