Agartala, 19th June 2024: Residents of Srirampur are gripped with fear as the water level of the Manu River continues to rise due to heavy rainfall in Kailashahar over the past two days. The situation is becoming increasingly dire, with many homes already being affected.
According to a social media post by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, the water level of the Manu River stood at 23.30 meters as of 8 am on Wednesday. With the dangerous threshold set at 24 meters, the community is on high alert.
The 199 Battalion BSF Camp, located just one kilometer away from Srirampur Vivekananda Hall, is in close proximity to more than a hundred families. The rising river water has already started infiltrating nearby homes, causing significant soil erosion around house boundaries. This alarming development has left the residents in a state of panic.
“If the government does not take immediate action to stop the water from breaching the dam, a large part of Ward No. 2 of Srirampur Gram Panchayat on the banks of the river may collapse,” warned Nayan Pal, the Pradhan of Srirampur Gram Panchayat. “We have informed various officials about the situation and they have assured us that steps will be taken to prevent further river erosion,” he added.
Local residents have expressed their concerns, highlighting the urgent need for intervention. “We are terrified as the river water has already started entering our houses. The soil around our homes is breaking away,” shared a distressed resident from Ward No. 2.
When questioned about whether the local MLA and Minister Tinku Roy had been informed, Nayan Pal admitted that the Minister has not yet been notified. “We will bring this matter to Minister Tinku Roy’s attention shortly,” he assured.
As the community waits anxiously, the focus now shifts to how quickly the authorities can implement measures to prevent further erosion and protect the residents of Ward No. 2 in Srirampur from the rising waters of the Manu River.
