Agartala, 19th June 2024: The long-standing issue of water logging in Srirampur in Kailashahar reached a boiling point on Wednesday morning as residents blocked National Highway No. 8 to protest against the inaction of the administration. The persistent flooding has resulted in the submergence of homes and fish ponds, causing significant distress and economic loss to the local population.
State opposition leader Jitendra Chowdhury, returning to Agartala from a party program in Kamalpur, encountered the blockade. Residents, frustrated by years of neglect, voiced their grievances to Chowdhury, highlighting the administration’s failure to address the water drainage problem despite repeated appeals.
Listening to their complaints, Chowdhury assured the protestors of immediate action. “I will speak with the officials under the sub-divisional ruler to ensure this problem is resolved swiftly,” he promised. His assurance had a calming effect on the protestors, who then decided to withdraw the blockade.
However, the residents remain skeptical. “We have been facing this problem for a long time. Despite drawing the attention of the sub-divisional administration multiple times, nothing has been done,” a local resident lamented. “If this continues, we will suffer even greater losses in the coming days. This protest was our way to wake up the administration.”
In a twist, it was noted that the local MLA took an alternate route to avoid the blockade, raising eyebrows among the community members. “The MLA avoiding the blockade shows a lack of concern for our plight,” remarked another resident.
The situation now hinges on whether the administrative authorities will take concrete steps to mitigate the water logging issue and prevent future occurrences. The residents of Srirampur are watching closely, hopeful yet cautious, for tangible actions to follow the opposition leader’s intervention.
