Agartala, 29th April 2026: Severe storms accompanied by heavy rainfall over the past two days have caused widespread disruption across Tripura, severely damaging the state’s power distribution network and affecting normal life in multiple districts.
Preliminary assessment by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) indicates extensive infrastructure loss across eight districts. In total, 1,665 electricity poles have collapsed, 745.99 km of conductors have been damaged, and 103 distribution transformers have been affected. The estimated financial loss so far stands at around Rs 5.59 crore.
Among the worst-affected areas is South Tripura, where 494 poles, 96 km of lines, and 12 transformers have been damaged. Regions such as Belonia, Santirbazar, and Sabroom are facing major power outages. Sepahijala district has reported 268 damaged poles, 61.73 km of conductors, and 15 transformers, while Khowai has recorded 205 poles affected. Gomati district saw damage to 129 poles and the highest transformer loss at 19 units. North Tripura reported 173 poles damaged, Unakoti 51, and Dhalai 85.
In West Tripura, including parts of Agartala, 260 poles have been damaged along with 183.9 km of electrical conductors, leading to significant disruption in both urban and semi-urban areas.
Despite the scale of destruction, restoration work is being carried out on a war footing. Field teams, including linemen and technical staff, are engaged round the clock in replacing poles, clearing fallen trees, and repairing damaged lines, often working under difficult and hazardous conditions. In several locations, restoration efforts have continued uninterrupted for more than a day.
According to TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu, the challenge is not only technical repair but also restoring normal daily life for citizens at the earliest. He noted that difficult terrain, waterlogging, and remote locations are slowing access in some areas, but efforts remain continuous.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath has been closely monitoring the situation, reviewing district-wise damage reports and directing officials to speed up restoration work. He has emphasized that restoring electricity supply across the state is the top priority and assured full administrative support for recovery operations.
Of the total estimated loss, damage to conductors accounts for about Rs3.73 crore, pole damage around Rs 83.25 lakh, and transformer losses approximately Rs 1.3 crore.
Authorities continue to focus on restoring power supply across affected regions as quickly as possible, aiming to bring relief to residents still facing outages following the storm.
