Agartala, 7th June 2024: Residents of Tripura’s Srirampur, located off Kanchanpur Sub Jail Road in North district on Friday blocked a major roadway to protest inadequate electricity and drinking water supplies. The road from Kanchanpur to Dharmanagar was flooded with protestors, stranding over 100 vehicles and disrupting the commutes of college students and office workers.
“We’ve been without proper electricity and water for months,” said one protestor. “Our pleas to the authorities have been ignored.”
The blockade prompted intervention from authorities. Around 12:20 PM, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCM) and the Block Development Officer (BDO) from Laljuri RD Block arrived for discussions. The protestors demanded immediate action, stating they wouldn’t lift the blockade until their demands were met.
“The residents have suffered too long,” a local leader explained. “We need real action, not just promises.”
After extensive negotiations, officials assured the residents that their demands would be addressed. On this promise, the blockade was lifted, but residents warned of larger protests if their issues aren’t resolved soon. Traffic has since resumed, but tension remains high as residents await concrete action from the authorities.
