Agartala, 29th June 2025 :   Tripura today joined the nation in celebrating Statistics Day 2025 to honour the legacy of Prof. Prashant Chandra Mahalanobis, the pioneer of modern Indian statistics.

A commemorative event was organized at Hall No. 3 of Pragya Bhavan, with Statistics Minister Bikas Debbarma attending as the chief guest.

In his address, Minister Debbarma highlighted the multifaceted contributions of Prof. Mahalanobis — a visionary statistician, scientist, economist, and institution builder who founded the Indian Statistical Institute and laid the foundation for integrated planning in India.

“Today is a significant day for the nation. Statistics is not just numbers—it is the backbone of policy planning and development,” said the Minister.

He underlined the pivotal role of the National Sample Survey (NSS) in shaping national policies and lauded the dedication of the state’s Economics and Statistics Department in collecting and analyzing real-time data.

The theme of this year’s Statistics Day is “75th Anniversary – National Sample Survey”, marking seven and a half decades of the NSS’s contribution to data-driven governance.

Minister Debbarma also announced the release of seven new statistical publications and the digital version of the book ‘Econometrics of Change’, showcasing Tripura’s progress through data.

He informed that the state’s statistical achievements have received recognition at the national level, with other states showing interest in learning from Tripura’s model.

He further urged everyone to participate in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative by planting trees in offices and institutions as a tribute to mothers and the environment.

Abhishek Chandra, Secretary of the Department of Economics and Statistics, elaborated on the newly launched publications and announced that a new tourism sector survey will commence from July.

The event began with a welcome address by Debanand Reang, Director of the Department, while Chiranjib Ghosh, Joint Director, spoke on the life and legacy of Prof. Mahalanobis. Prosenjit Nath Chowdhury, Joint Director (Census Operations) from the Union Home Ministry, also addressed the gathering.

The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the state’s commitment to data-driven development and sustainable policy-making.
