Agartala, 29th June 2025:  A major controversy has erupted following a shocking case of ragging reported from the boys’ hostel of Umakanta Academy, one of Tripura’s oldest and most reputed educational institutions. Two students allegedly faced severe physical and mental harassment at the hands of their seniors, triggering widespread concern. Acting swiftly on the complaint, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikas Debbarma rushed to the hostel premises today and held an emergency meeting with the hostel superintendent, teachers, and students. Expressing deep concern over the disturbing incident, the Minister strongly condemned ragging, calling it a “curse for student life” that damages both the academic atmosphere and the mental well-being of students. “Such incidents will not be tolerated under any circumstances,”

Minister Debbarma asserted. He emphasized that administrative and legal action will be taken against those found guilty after a proper investigation. During the meeting, the Minister directed hostel authorities to implement a robust monitoring system to prevent recurrence of such incidents. He also encouraged students to foster a positive and inclusive environment in the hostel, stressing the importance of mutual respect and discipline. The incident has sparked outrage among parents, educators, and civil society members, raising questions about the safety mechanisms in educational institutions. As the government assures strict action, all eyes are now on the inquiry and subsequent measures to ensure justice and prevent future incidents.
