Storm devastates betel plantations at Sabroom, farmers appeal for aid

Date:

Agartala, 27th April 2026:  A powerful nor’wester struck Sabroom subdivision yesterday evening, leaving widespread destruction across several betel plantations. Farmers in Botatali Gram Panchayat were among the worst affected, as heavy rain and fierce winds ravaged their fields.

Local cultivator Arjun Dey’s plantation was almost completely destroyed, while fellow farmer Dilip Das also suffered severe losses. Both men, who had painstakingly built their livelihoods around betel cultivation, saw their only source of income reduced to ruins within minutes.

Speaking to reporters, an emotional Arjun Dey said, “Everything was gone in just a few minutes. I don’t know how my family will survive now.” Dilip Das echoed the sentiment, adding, “The garden was our only hope. Now we are left with nothing.”

The two farmers have appealed to the Tripura government for urgent financial assistance, warning that without compensation their future remains uncertain. Local authorities have begun assessing the extent of the damage, but the affected cultivators are anxiously awaiting swift relief measures.

This incident underscores the vulnerability of rural livelihoods to sudden natural disasters, with farmers hoping the administration will step in to help them rebuild.
