Tensions flare in North Ekchari over Panchayat power struggle

Date:

Agartala, 27th April 2026:   A confrontation erupted in North Ekchari village this afternoon as rival political groups clashed over control of the local panchayat.

According to reports, a BJP delegation had planned to submit a deputation to the panchayat secretary. However, large numbers of TIPRA Motha supporters gathered outside the panchayat office from the morning, determined to block the BJP team’s entry. Their aggressive stance quickly escalated tensions in the area, prompting shopkeepers in North Ekchari market to shut down businesses out of fear.

The situation was eventually brought under control after police, led by Amarpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Nirman Das, intervened. Despite the restoration of order, the BJP delegation was forced to retreat without submitting its deputation due to the hostile atmosphere created by TIPRA Motha supporters.

The incident underscores the growing volatility in Tripura’s villages following recent political contests, with grassroots power struggles spilling into public spaces and disrupting daily life.
