Tension in Kailashahar as Protest March over Waqf Amendment Bill Turns Violent; Several Injured, 7 Arrested

Agartala, 12th April 2025:Tension gripped Kailashahar today as a protest rally demanding the withdrawal of the Waqf Amendment Bill turned violent, leading to a skirmish between protesters and police personnel. Several individuals, including police officers and demonstrators, sustained injuries in the confrontation.

The rally, which was scheduled to start from Tilabazar and conclude at the old office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, was intercepted by the police at Kubjar area, well before it could reach its destination. As security personnel tried to halt the procession, chaos erupted and a minor scuffle broke out. The situation escalated when the police used light force on two protesters to bring the situation under control.

Eyewitnesses reported that several protesters were injured in the clash, while two police personnel also suffered minor injuries. The police arrested around seven individuals in connection with the incident.

Upon receiving information about the unrest, Unakoti District Superintendent of Police and DIG Ratiranjan Debnath rushed to the spot to assess the situation. However, the crowd had already dispersed and the situation had calmed down before his arrival.

In response to the flare-up, a heavy deployment of Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Border Security Force (BSF) has been made in and around the area to maintain law and order.

Authorities have confirmed that the situation is currently under control.
