Agartala, 23rd October 2024: As part of the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0 (TFYC 2.0), five drives were conducted on Wednesday under the supervision of the District Tobacco Control Cell of South Tripura. The operations took place in Sabroom, Jalefa, Sonabazar, Manubazar and Kalacherra Bazar including surrounding school areas within the Sabroom sub-division.
The joint operation, carried out by the Department of Health in collaboration with Sabroom and Manubazar Police Stations focused on enforcing Section 4 of the Tobacco Act, which prohibits smoking in public places, Section 6(a), which bans the sale of tobacco products to individuals under eighteen, and Section 6(b), which restricts the sale of tobacco within 100 yards of educational institutions.
District Nodal Officer Dr. Alok Das highlighted the campaign’s objectives: “Our main goal is to increase public awareness about tobacco laws and inform the public about the harmful aspects of tobacco.”
The drives resulted in fines for 20 shopkeepers, totaling Rs 2,700. District Program Manager Tapas Das and District Consultant Arijit Das, along with police personnel from Sabroom and Manubazar police stations, were actively involved in the operations.
“Such operations are crucial in educating the public and enforcing tobacco control laws,” said Tapas Das. The campaign aims to ensure compliance and promote a tobacco-free environment, particularly around schools.
