Agartala, 28th August 2025: The Tripura Private Security Guard Union and Tripura Sanitation Workers Union jointly submitted a deputation to the state Labour Department on Thursday, pressing for improved wages, social security benefits, and working conditions for thousands of sanitation and private security personnel across the state.
During the deputation, union representatives handed over a detailed charter of demands to department officials, highlighting the urgent need for government intervention to safeguard the rights and livelihoods of workers employed under various private agencies.
Union leaders noted that private security guards, housekeeping staff, and sanitation workers now represent one of the largest labor sectors in India. In Tripura alone, an estimated 16,000 to 17,000 workers are currently employed under nearly 25 agencies—many of whom hail from rural, Dalit, and marginalized communities. A significant portion of this workforce comprises women.
These workers are deployed across government and private institutions, as well as residential complexes and individual households. Despite their critical role in maintaining public hygiene and safety, union leaders described their working conditions as “dire.” Many reportedly work 10 to 12 hours daily without receiving fair wages, and rising inflation has further eroded their earnings.
“Agencies often delay salary payments, and workers are routinely denied statutory benefits such as EPF, ESI, gratuity, bonuses, and paid leave,” said a union spokesperson. “This is a violation of labor laws and a betrayal of the dignity of work.”
The unions urged the Labour Department to take immediate and effective steps to address these grievances. They demanded that the government play an active role in ensuring fair compensation, timely payments, and access to social security schemes for this vast and vulnerable workforce.
