Agartala, 6th August 2025 : A series of thefts in three schools of Kailashahar in a single night has triggered widespread panic and drawn sharp criticism of the law and order situation in Unakoti district. The incident has not only shocked the education community and parents but has also exposed glaring lapses in police vigilance.
The schools targeted were the historic Radhakishoor Institution—located right opposite the Kailashahar police station—Ramakrishna Shiksha Institute in Govindapur, and Srirampur Suryamani Memorial Higher Secondary School in Chandipur. The coordinated nature of the break-ins has led many to believe it was the work of an organized gang.
Radhakishore Institution Headmaster Nitish Biswas said, “The group of thieves first broke the lock near the mid-day meal room and entered the premises. They disabled the CCTV by cutting the wires and vandalized four rooms, including my office. They took away cash and even the CCTV hard disk.”
Echoing similar distress, Ramakrishna Shiksha Institute Headmaster Asim Chakraborty stated, “They broke the grill gate and the office room lock, ransacked cupboards and cash counters. Though they failed to access the main chest, we informed the police immediately in the morning, but no one showed up even after an hour. This isn’t the first time our school has been robbed, yet no firm action has been taken.”
Headmaster Arindam Sarkar of Srirampur School added, “They broke into multiple rooms, destroyed lockers, cut CCTV lines, and stole the hard disk. The operation was clearly planned.”
The thefts follow recent comments by MLA Birajit Sinha, who had criticized the deterioration of law and order and questioned the role of the district police superintendent. However, SP Sudhambika R had earlier claimed, “There has been no deterioration in law and order in Unakoti district. The police are working properly.”
These thefts have cast serious doubt on that claim. Citizens are alarmed that a school situated opposite a police station could be looted with such ease. One local resident summed up the public sentiment: “If this can happen under the nose of the police, imagine the condition in remote areas.”
The incident has intensified demands for accountability and immediate action from the police administration.
