Agartala, 12th January 2026: Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha has said that he will hold discussions with the Assam Government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the expansion and modernization of the Churaibari Check Post in North Tripura district to ease traffic congestion and ensure systematic vehicle checking.
The Chief Minister shared this while speaking to the media after returning from a two-day tour of North Tripura district, where he stayed overnight. He said multiple complaints had been received from the Churaibari border area, prompting him to personally inspect the situation.
“There is a clear difference between reviewing complaints from an office and examining the actual conditions on the ground. After visiting the check post, I found that the grievances raised by the people were valid,” Dr. Saha said.
He stated that immediate corrective measures have been ordered and warned that the government would take strict action if the problems are not resolved. “Such irregularities will not be tolerated,” he added.
Dr. Saha highlighted that limited space at the checking point on the Assam side is causing frequent traffic snarls. “I will take up the issue with the Assam Government to explore ways to expand the area for smooth vehicle movement and effective inspections. The matter will also be raised in the plenary session,” he said.
The Chief Minister also expressed concern over stone crushing units operating near the National Highway. “The environmental condition in the area was alarming. As per rules, such units must be located at least 100 metres away from the highway. Many of these units were established during the Left Front tenure and were not adequately monitored,” he said.
He added that a meeting would be convened to regulate and reorganize stone crushing operations and noted that several trucks were found carrying overloaded stone materials, calling for immediate reforms.
During the visit, Dr. Saha also inspected the IOCL depot and interacted with drivers, advising them not to engage in illegal payments. “If any such incidents occur, they should be reported directly to my office. This will not be allowed to continue,” he said.
He further said that IOCL officials were instructed to ensure transparency and adherence to proper procedures in their operations.
