Agartala, 23rd June 2025: The Tripura Commission for Women visited the residence of a domestic violence survivor 28-year-old Manisha Das at Sekerkote Purba Para, Kamalasagar this afternoon following reports of sustained abuse allegedly at the hands of her husband and in-laws.
According to police sources, Manisha married Suryadhan Shukla Das of Purba Laxmibil Burama Para under Bishalgarh Police Station in 2021. Within a year of marriage, she was reportedly subjected to escalating physical and mental abuse by her husband and other family members. Despite enduring the trauma for years in silence, Manisha recently escaped and took shelter first at a friend’s house, before returning to her parental home.
On June 17, her family lodged a formal complaint against her husband with Bishalgarh Women’s Police Station citing sustained harassment and cruelty under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code. The matter gained statewide attention after media coverage highlighted the complaint.
Reacting swiftly, TCW Chairperson Jharna Debbarma accompanied by commission members met with Manisha and her parents to assess the situation. “Manisha revealed that her husband’s family was suspicious of her character and abusive, especially after four years of childlessness,” Debbarma told reporters following the visit.
Debbarma stressed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring justice. “The State Women’s Commission stands firmly with Manisha. We will provide her with every possible legal and psychological support,” she assured.
Addressing reporters, Debbarma pointed to two key factors behind the rising graph of gender-based violence in the state. “Early marriages deprive women of the maturity required to cope with marital responsibilities, while growing substance addiction among young men is further exacerbating domestic violence,” she said.
According to National Crime Records Bureau data, Tripura reported over 600 cases of crimes against women in 2023 alone—a figure activists fear may represent only a fraction of actual incidents due to underreporting.
“We won’t tolerate any form of violence against women. The Commission remains vigilant and committed to protecting women’s rights across the state,” Debbarma declared.
