Agartala, 8th July 2026: Tripura Pradesh Congress has raised objections over the ongoing voter list revision exercise, demanding greater transparency and clear information from the election authorities regarding the implementation of the Special Summary Revision (SIR) process.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty said the voter verification exercise was a significant matter that required public awareness and cooperation. He urged the authorities to ensure that the entire process was conducted in a fair and transparent manner.
Chakraborty stated that the state Congress leadership had already submitted a letter to the Election Commission of India through the State Election Officer, seeking clarification on various aspects of the SIR exercise. However, he claimed that the party had not received any official response or update on the issue.
Referring to the Election Commission’s notification issued on May 14, he said the process involved door-to-door distribution of forms by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) from June 30, followed by verification and preparation of electoral records. According to him, the exercise was aimed at updating voter lists, detecting ineligible entries and ensuring accuracy in the electoral rolls.
Emphasising the need for a reliable voter list, Chakraborty said maintaining the credibility of elections was essential. He alleged that inconsistencies in the implementation of the revision process had created doubts among people and political parties.
He further claimed that during a recent all-party meeting, the State Election Commissioner failed to provide satisfactory answers regarding the Congress’ concerns and indicated that the process in Tripura would begin later in the year.
Targeting the BJP-led government, the Congress leader alleged that the ruling party was attempting to influence electoral procedures due to declining public support. The allegations were rejected by the BJP and election authorities.
Questioning the variation in timelines between states, Chakraborty referred to the voter revision process in Karnataka and asked why similar procedures were not being followed uniformly in Tripura.
The Congress spokesperson said the party would approach the State Election Officer again to seek detailed explanations. He asserted that the voter list must be prepared without bias and that the democratic rights of citizens should be protected.
