Agartala, 1ST June 2026: Youth Congress President Neel Kamal Saha today has alleged that unemployment and the job crisis in Tripura have reached an alarming level, citing findings from NITI Aayog’s 2026 report to support his claims.
Addressing the issue of employment and apprenticeship opportunities in the state, Saha said Tripura’s contribution to India’s overall apprenticeship programmes remains below 0.1 percent, highlighting the limited opportunities available for young job seekers. He stated that employment prospects in the industrial sector continue to remain a distant dream due to the absence of industries and manufacturing units in the state.
According to Saha, persistent challenges in industrial development, including poor connectivity with the industrial sector, lack of coordination among local employers, and obstacles in implementing various development projects, have hindered the growth of industries in Tripura. He alleged that successive governments have made promises and secured votes but failed to create meaningful employment opportunities for the state’s youth.
He also expressed concern over the state’s annual unemployment rate, describing the situation as unfortunate despite official figures placing it below the national average.
Saha noted that, in the absence of sufficient private-sector employment opportunities, government jobs remain the primary source of hope for unemployed youths. He pointed out that the education sector traditionally offers the largest number of government job opportunities. However, he claimed that nearly 15,000 teachers have retired over the past seven to eight years, while many vacant posts remain unfilled and are gradually being abolished.
He further alleged that candidates who have cleared the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) have been staging protests and sit-ins at the Education Bhavan, demanding recruitment. Despite their repeated appeals, many qualified candidates have yet to receive job offers.
Criticizing the government, Saha said the practice of conducting TET examinations twice a year has also been discontinued. According to aspirants, 368 candidates qualified in TET-I and 1,488 candidates qualified in TET-II in 2024 after successfully clearing the examinations and obtaining eligibility certificates. However, they are still awaiting appointment letters.
