Tripura MLA Seeks Centre’s Immediate Action Against Illegal Migration

Date:

Agartala, 29th May 2026:   Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking stronger measures to address illegal migration in Tripura, including steps to detect, detain, and deport undocumented migrants.

In his letter, the MLA also urged the Centre to expedite the implementation of key policy measures such as the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Inner Line Permit (ILP), Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019, arguing that these mechanisms are necessary to strengthen border regulation and internal security in the state.

Debbarma described illegal migration as a serious concern with implications for national security and the demographic balance of Tripura. He stated that the state’s geographical location makes it particularly vulnerable to cross-border movement, which he claimed poses risks to both indigenous communities and broader security interests.

He alleged that irregular migrants have entered the state over a long period by exploiting administrative weaknesses, and in some cases with the assistance of corrupt officials or political actors.

The MLA further claimed that some individuals have managed to obtain official documents such as Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, ration cards, PAN cards, passports, driving licences, and other certificates using fraudulent paperwork.

He also stated that Tripura is being used as a transit route for movement to other parts of India. According to him, while some migrants seek livelihood opportunities, others may be involved in unlawful activities, though he did not provide specific evidence for these claims.

Debbarma added that unchecked migration has contributed to social and economic pressures in the state, including disputes over land, strain on public services, unemployment, and cross-border crime concerns. He expressed dissatisfaction over what he described as limited action by both state and central authorities despite repeated representations to officials, including the Governor, Chief Minister, state police leadership, and border security agencies.

The MLA reiterated his demand for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit system in Tripura, saying it would help regulate entry into the state and curb unauthorized movement across the border. He also noted reports regarding the formation of a high-level committee comprising retired judges, administrators, and police officials to examine issues related to illegal migration, calling it a positive and timely step for addressing security and law-and-order concerns.
