Agartala, 11th June 2024:  In a major environmental and tourism boost for Tripura, the state government has announced plans to develop the largest flower garden in the North East region.

This ambitious project will be located in the Tulashikhar forest range of Takchaiya in Khowai district. Land has already been earmarked for the garden, which will serve as a pilot project. If successful, similar flower gardens will be established in other districts of the state.

Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma made the announcement during a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday. He emphasized the government’s commitment to making the garden a major tourist attraction.

“In recent years, long-standing trees along the road have been cut down for various developmental works, including the widening of the national highway. Unfortunately, there was no alternative but to cut down these trees. To counteract the environmental impact and maintain oxygen levels, we plan to plant five lakh saplings on July 5 within five minutes,” said Minister Debbarma.

The mass plantation drive will involve administrative staff from various departments, including schools, colleges, social organizations, and the army. This initiative will kick off a month-long tree planting campaign, which will continue throughout the year. The minister stressed the importance of not just planting saplings but also ensuring their proper maintenance.

In addition to the flower garden, the government plans to plant a large number of trees along the newly widened national highways. These will include various fruit trees, enhancing both the environment and local biodiversity.

Minister Debbarma also addressed the need for revitalizing existing parks in the state. He revealed plans to construct multi-utility halls for social events within amusement parks and to enhance cultural offerings with Rabindra Sangeet and Kokborok Music in Heritage Park. Furthermore, an aquarium is set to be developed in Neheru Park, with work commencing soon.
