Two youths arrested with illegal Burmese betel nuts in Churaibari

Agartala, September 12, 2023: The Assam Churaibari police nabbed two youths with illegal Burmese betel nuts on Tuesday morning, while they were transporting them from Karimganj to Dharmanagar. The police seized the vehicle and the betel nuts, which had a black market value of around Rs 2.5 lakh. The police also informed the Bazarichara police to file a case against them.

The incident took place at around 9 am, when the police spotted a small cargo vehicle with the number TR05F-1768 carrying one hundred cartoon eggs and some sacks. The police stopped the vehicle and searched it. They found that the sacks contained illegal Burmese betel nuts, weighing about 500 kg.

The police arrested the two youths, who were identified as Zulfiqar Ali (30), son of Ashfar Ali, and Prasenjit Deb (28), son of deceased Vidyut Deb. Both of them are residents of Ward No. 2 of Nadiapur-Shanichhara village under Churaibari police station of Tripura state. They confessed that they were involved in the illegal trade of Burmese betel nuts.

The police took the vehicle and the betel nuts to the police station and informed the in-charge Pranab Milli. He said that the police would file a case against the accused under specific clauses and take further action. He also said that the police would continue to crack down on the illegal smuggling of Burmese betel nuts in the area.
