Agartala, 28th October 2025 :  Tripura’s education landscape is undergoing a steady transformation, with notable improvements in access, equity, and infrastructure, according to the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE+) 2024–25 report released by the Ministry of Education.

The state currently accommodates 6,90,084 students across 4,943 schools, supported by 37,733 teachers. However, the report highlights a concerning staffing gap: 340 schools serving 6,492 students are being run by a single teacher. Despite this, Tripura maintains a pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) of 24:1, closely aligned with the national average, suggesting effective deployment in most areas.

The report reveals that 10.8% of schools in Tripura have fewer than 10 students, though none report zero enrolment. Among the 485 private unaided recognized schools, 185 offer classes I to V, 145 extend to class VIII, 75 up to class X, and 79 provide education through class XII.

Enrolment figures show 273,232 students at the foundational level and 266,419 at the secondary level, with gender parity indicating consistent participation among girls. Aadhaar linkage has reached 61.8% of students, facilitating direct benefit transfers under schemes like PM Poshan and scholarship programs.

Dropout rates remain relatively low: 1.30% at the preparatory level, 3.20% at the middle level, and 8.8% at the secondary level.

Infrastructure-wise, all schools are electrified, and over 97% have separate toilets for boys and girls. Of the total enrolment, 4,88,370 students attend 4,187 government schools, 28,103 study in 42 government-aided institutions, and 12,067 are enrolled in central and special-category schools such as Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, and Eklavya Model Schools. Private institutions cater to 1,61,544 students, reflecting a growing preference for non-government education.

Staffing disparities persist: government schools average seven teachers per institution, while private schools, though fewer, employ 8,195 teachers—averaging over 16 per school.

While basic amenities are widely available, modern infrastructure remains limited. Only 41% of schools have internet access. Solar panels are installed in 221 schools, and 186 have rainwater harvesting systems—just 4% and 3% respectively. Computer education is offered in 3,289 schools, including 85% of private institutions. Science labs are present in 428 of the 1,229 secondary-level schools.

Tripura’s schools show promising readiness: 4,109 have functional drinking water facilities, 3,952 report internet connectivity and functional toilets, and 221 are equipped with ramps and handrails for Children With Special Needs (CWSN).

Overall, the UDISE+ 2024–25 report positions Tripura as a state making meaningful strides toward the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, with a balanced PTR, controlled dropout rates, and a growing digital footprint shaping a positive trajectory for education in the Northeast.
