Agartala, 23rd May 2024: In a display of growing frustration, villagers from the Dharmanagar subdivision’s Krishnapur to Tilthoi Jubaraj Nagar road staged a blockade on Thursday morning.
The protest, which began at 10:30 AM, was in response to prolonged delays and substandard construction work on the vital road, which has caused significant inconvenience and disrupted daily life in the area.
The road, which is intended to be 24 feet wide and serves as a crucial link to Anandabazar, has been under construction for over four months. However, the villagers assert that the width of the road does not meet the promised specifications at various points, being narrower than 24 feet in several areas. This discrepancy, coupled with the frequent closures of the road over the extended construction period, has exacerbated the villagers’ discontent.
Approximately 800 residents of the affected area participated in the protest, which resulted in a blockade that lasted for about two hours. The blockade caused a significant disruption, with thousands of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road.
The situation drew the attention of local authorities and officials from various departments, who promptly arrived at the scene to address the villagers’ concerns. In a bid to resolve the standoff, a representative of the contractor responsible for the road work was sent to negotiate with the villagers. After discussions, it was agreed that the grievances of the villagers would be addressed in a meeting scheduled for next Sunday.
The villagers were assured that the road construction would proceed according to their demands. Following this assurance, the blockade was lifted at around 12:30 PM, allowing the flow of traffic to resume.
