Violence Erupts at Agartala Nagarjala Bus Stand Amid Protest Over Alleged Extortion

Date:

Agartala, 3rd June 2026:  Allegations of violence and political unrest have surfaced in the state capital after two separate incidents reported within 24 hours, including a clash at the Nagarjala Bus Stand in Agartala.

According to reports, tensions escalated on Wednesday morning when a workers’ organization linked to a nationalist trade union launched a protest by halting bus services from around 8 a.m. The protest was reportedly aimed at highlighting long-standing issues such as alleged extortion, worker exploitation, lack of drinking water facilities, and unauthorized parking fee collection at the bus stand.

The situation allegedly turned violent when a group of individuals, claimed by protesters to be associated with local political workers from Ward 33, attacked protesting workers. The incident reportedly took place in the presence of police personnel. Several workers, including a union leader identified as Liton Kar, sustained injuries and were taken to hospital.

Protesters alleged that members linked to a political youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party were involved in the assault, carrying party flags during the attack. They further claimed that illegal fee collection and irregularities have been ongoing at the bus stand for a long time under local administration.

Liton Kar accused the local councillor, Abhijit Mallick, of running unauthorized parking fee systems and failing to provide accountability for collected funds. He also alleged intimidation of workers who raised objections. These claims have not been independently verified.

In response, the councillor reportedly denied the allegations, describing the complainant as a “troublemaker” with a history of criminal cases, and claimed that the protest disrupted normal passenger services at the bus stand.

The incident comes amid heightened political sensitivity in the area, which falls under the broader 8 Town Bordowali constituency of Agartala.

As of the latest reports, police have not confirmed any arrests, and investigations are ongoing.
