Agartala, 30th August 2024: The swearing-in ceremony at Rajnagar Community Hall on Friday turned violent, leaving several BJP workers injured. The injured are currently receiving treatment at Dharmanagar District Hospital.
The incident occurred during the oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected members of Rajnagar Gram Panchayat. The election results were inconclusive, with BJP winning five seats, Congress four, and CPIM two, leading to a coalition between CPIM and Congress to form the panchayat.
According to Abdul Mumin, a BJP worker and winning panchayat member, the ceremony proceeded smoothly until CPIM and Congress workers allegedly attacked BJP members. Injured BJP workers, including Abdul Mumin, Ratnadeep Das, Sujit Das, Altab Uddin, Sanjay Pal, and Gourmani Das, were initially treated at Kadamtala Social Hospital before being referred to Dharmanagar District Hospital for further care.
Following the attack, BJP supporters surrounded Kadamtala police station in protest. A significant police force, along with sub-divisional administration officials, was deployed to control the situation. Despite police intervention, tensions remain high in the area.
CPIM and Congress have accused BJP members of initiating the violence due to their inability to secure control of the panchayat. The Kadamtala block area is currently fraught with accusations and counter-accusations from all parties involved.
