Agartala, 20th February 2025:    In a shocking incident of medieval barbarity, Yashoda Debbarma from Narendra Debbarma Para area of Bishalgarh’s Harishnagar was brutally assaulted following false accusations of witchcraft. The incident took place on the night of the 16th at around 10 pm.

Local sources revealed that a group of unruly youth, led by BJP’s Chunoputi leader Uttam Debbarma, Aghore Debbarma, Rahul Debbarma, and Sanjit Debbarma, forcibly took Yashoda Debbarma from her home to Uttam Debbarma’s residence. She was accused of being one of five female witches in the area.

The attackers subjected her to a severe beating with a whip and, in a horrific act, amputated one of her legs with an axe. Their purported aim was to exorcize the “witch” from Yashoda Debbarma. After hours of torture, they abandoned her on the road.

Upon receiving the news, local residents rescued Yashoda Debbarma and rushed her to the hospital. A case was filed at Bishalgarh police station; however, the police response was reportedly inadequate.

On Thursday afternoon, a delegation from the CPIM Bishalgarh Sub-divisional Committee, including Sub-divisional Secretary Partha Pratim Majumdar and party leaders Krishnapada Saha, Dhruba Sarkar, Hiranmoy Narayan Debnath, Mallika Debbarma, Swapan Debbarma, and Sanjay Debnath, visited Yashoda Debbarma’s house. They demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and called on the state government to cover her medical expenses.
