14 Maoists, including senior leader Jairam, killed in an exchange of fire with security forces

Date:

Top Maoist leader Jairam, a central committee member carrying a reward of Rs.1 crore on his head, was among 14 Maoists killed during a joint operation conducted by the Odisha and Chhattisgarh police over the last two days.

The operation was launched on the night of January 19, based on intelligence inputs about the presence of a large number of Maoists in the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband district, close to Odisha’s Nayagarh district.

The joint operation, carried out by the Special Operation Group (SOG) of Odisha Police, CoBRA forces from Chhattisgarh, the CRPF, and the District Reserve Guard, began after security forces received information about the movement of Maoists linked to the Sunabeda-Dharmabandhu Committee.

During the initial exchange of fire, two female Maoists were killed, and security forces recovered a large cache of firearms, ammunition, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), including one self-loading rifle (SLR), from the site.

The combing operation intensified in the area, leading to the deaths of 12 more Maoists on Monday night and Tuesday morning. Among the deceased was top Maoist cadre Jairam, also known as Chalpati, from Odisha, who carried a reward of Rs.1 crore on his head, police sources said.

According to sources, the exchange of fire occurred inside the reserve forest under the Mainpur police station area on the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border. Odisha police sources stated that the death toll could rise as a massive search operation is currently underway in the area.

A significant cache of arms and ammunition was also seized from the site.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the operation as a major achievement and a severe blow to Naxalism.

Taking to his social media platform, Shah stated, “Our security forces have achieved significant success towards building a Naxal-free Bharat.”

He further said, “The CRPF, SOG of Odisha Police, and Chhattisgarh Police have neutralized 14 Naxalites in a joint operation along the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border. With our resolve for a Naxal-free India and the joint efforts of our security forces, Naxalism is breathing it’s last today,”Shah stated.
