Amarnath Yatra suspended temporarily due to rain

Date:

Amarnath yatra has been temporarily suspended from both Pahalgam and Baltal routes due to rains on Saturday, officials said.

They said no yatri was allowed to proceed to the cave shrine as a precautionary measure due to inclement weather.

“The yatra has been temporarily suspended to ensure the safety of pilgrims ”, they said.

Several parts of south Kashmir received rains during the last 24 hours. According to reports, Pahalgam received 18 and Baltal 7.5 mm of rain till this morning.

The 52-day Amarnath Yatra began last Saturday from the twin tracks of Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the Baltal route in Ganderbal district.

Officials said so far over 1.5 lakh pilgrims have paid obeisance at the cave shrine which houses the naturally formed ice-lingam.

The Yatra will end on August 19. Last year, 4.5 lakh pilgrims visited the holy shrine and this year the authorities are expecting numbers to go up.
