MPs raise issue of digital frauds, undertrials and inclusion of ICDs in health scheme in RS

Date:

Multiple issues ranging from digital frauds to the inclusion of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) in the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana were raised in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday during Zero Hour with the permission of the Chair.

Citing Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, Congress MP Rajeev Shukla raised the issue of the growing number of digital frauds in the country involving crores of rupees.

Shukla urged the government to take stringent measures against fraudsters and stated that even the police is not well equipped and trained to handle the rising number of digital fraud cases.

Ajay Pratap Singh of BJP requested the government change the name of Sanjay Gandhi National Park Tiger Reserve, situated in Madhya Pradesh.

Jaggesh, a BJP MP from Karnataka, demanded to include implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) in the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana to ensure that poor people don’t suffer from life-threatening cardiac arrests.

He said that ICD devices control the abnormal heart rate and could prevent life-threatening heart rate disorders and cardiac arrest, but noted that the device is quite costly, and hence the poor who cannot afford it have no choice but to suffer from the disease or die.

Jaggesh said that the device is currently not covered under any health scheme.

Saket Gokhale of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) demanded the provide facility of a lawyer for undertrial prisoners.

Stating that 77% of the prisoners are under trial, Gokhale said that the majority of the undertrials are in prisons for petty crimes.

He said that undertrials live in pitiable conditions in prisons, and even sexual assaults are rampant against them.

Gokhale also shared his experience in Sabarmati jail and said that the food provided to undertrials is very substandard.

“Legal aid is nonexistent. It takes undertrials six months to reach a lawyer,” he said.

Congress leader Akhilesh Prasad Singh expressed concerns regarding the cancellation of wait-listed tickets at railway counters.

He said that rail passengers face a lot of inconvenience in cancelling their tickets bought from counters and urged the government to reduce cancellation fees.

Rajani Ashokrao Patil of the Grand Old Party raised concern over the unreasonable rain in the country.

Ajit Kumar Bhuyan from the IND urged the government to take immediate action against widespread deforestation in the state of Assam.
