War against drugs to continue: Manipur CM

 Manipur government will continue its drive against drug trafficking, said Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday during the observation of International Day against drug and illicit trafficking.

He said about a 56 percent decline was reported in poppy plantations after the government started a campaign against drugs.

Biren said so far, about 18000 hectares where poppy was planted were destroyed, and 297 people involved in drug use were nabbed. The Manipur crisis is linked with the campaign against drug he said.

He further said the government will not surrender and the drive against drugs will continue.

He further said Manipur faced a crisis related to HIV and AIDS in the 90s, and high rates of drug abuse cases were reported in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Imphal and other places. A police personnel also died in the campaign against drugs at Sajik Tampak, he said.

As part of the observation, Manipur police organised a bike rally, which was flagged off by the Chief Minister. The rally passed through important streets of the city and spread messages about the evils of drugs .
