15 detained over assault on US military personnel in Türkiye

Two U.S. military personnel stationed on a U.S. Navy ship docked in Türkiye’s western port city of Izmir were attacked on Monday, and 15 people have been detained, local authorities said.

A group of members from the Türkiye Youth Union assaulted two U.S. military personnel in civilian clothes in the Konak district of Izmir at around 4 p.m. local time (1300 GMT) on Monday, the Izmir Governor’s Office said in a statement.

“Additionally, five U.S. soldiers in civilian clothes, who observed the incident from a distance, were also involved, and our security forces intervened swiftly,” the office said.

The U.S. Embassy in Ankara confirmed the incident on the social media platform X and expressed gratitude to Turkish authorities for their prompt response.
