Agartala, 9th August 2025: In a deeply disturbing incident that has shocked the state, a Tripura State Rifles (TSR) officer has been accused of poisoning his one-year-old daughter, allegedly because she was born a girl. The child’s mother has claimed that her husband, Rathindra Debbarma, a soldier of the TSR 10th Battalion currently posted at Khumulung ADC Headquarters, fed the infant poisoned cold drink, leading to her death.
The incident took place in the Tulashikhar area of Khowai district. According to the mother, Debbarma had long subjected her to physical and mental abuse, blaming her for not bearing a son. The family resides in the Behala Bari locality.
On the night of the tragedy, the mother alleged that Debbarma took the child while she was asleep and later fled. She was informed that her daughter’s body had been taken to the morgue at GB Hospital. Distraught and confused, the grieving mother rushed to the hospital, questioning who had transported the child and which doctor had examined her. She claimed to have received no answers.
Tensions escalated at GB Hospital when locals identified Rathindra Debbarma on the premises. Outraged by the allegations, a crowd gathered, prompting police to intervene and escort the accused to a nearby police station under tight security.
Police authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over gender-based violence and discrimination in the region.
