Acute water, sanitation crisis at Chebri market: Locals demand intervention as facilities remain defunct

Agartala, 19th November 2025:   The Chebri Market is grappling with a severe shortage of drinking water and sanitation facilities, leaving buyers, sellers, and daily visitors in mounting distress. Despite lakhs of rupees being spent on constructing a public toilet adjacent to the market, the facility has long remained in a dilapidated state, with little effort from the responsible authorities to restore it. As a result, the toilet has become virtually unusable.

Residents allege that while the local legislator has consistently pushed for development projects to improve amenities in the area, negligence by the West Chebri Gram Panchayat and the market committee has worsened the situation. The toilet near the Chebri fish market has been out of service for years, forcing traders, commuters, and customers to struggle without basic sanitation.

Members of the traders’ association said the issue has been repeatedly brought to the attention of the panchayat, but no effective measures have been taken so far. Left with no alternative, they have now appealed to the administration for immediate renovation of the rundown toilet and a permanent solution to the drinking water crisis in the market.

Local residents expressed hope that the authorities will act swiftly to resolve the problem, ensuring relief for the thousands who depend on Chebri Market every day.
