Tripura Ex-Insurgents Urge Govt to Resume Stalled Rehabilitation Scheme, block NH

Agartala, 22nd December 2025:  Several vehicles, including goods-laden trucks, were stranded on the Assam–Agartala National Highway late Sunday night after a surrendered insurgent group, the Tripura Guerrilla Returned Demand Committee, blocked the highway. The group has issued three key demands, including the immediate revival of the Rs 23 crore broad rehabilitation package.

The blockade took place at Baramura in West Tripura district. A protester, who is a surrendered insurgent, said that they are pre-1998 returnees who had joined the mainstream following talks with the then Left Front government.

“For proper settlement and rehabilitation, Rs 45 crore was sanctioned on May 22, 2007. Between 2008 and 2018, several meetings were held and the scheme was implemented. However, after the change of government and the onset of COVID-19, all initiatives were halted, and no updates have been provided. We have repeatedly approached officials, but no action has been taken. We now demand that the government utilize the remaining funds by restarting the scheme,” he explained.

He added that under the CM Rubber Mission, the scheme had run successfully for three years, but this year it has not been implemented. “The government has provided rubber saplings but no funds for fencing them. Despite repeated requests to the administration, nothing has been done. If the government fails to act, we will continue blocking the national highway,” he warned.

The protesters also demanded the immediate withdrawal of all pending cases against former insurgents who have returned to civilian life.
