Agartala, 1ST June 2026:  A heated controversy has emerged after a young woman from Tripura was allegedly subjected to identity-based remarks during a bus journey in Kolkata. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread discussion and strong reactions online.

According to reports, the woman, who has been residing and working in Kolkata for several years, was traveling on a public bus when she was allegedly targeted over her speech. Passengers reportedly questioned her identity after hearing her speak in a Bengali dialect influenced by her home state.

The situation escalated when she was allegedly labeled a “Bangladeshi” by some co-passengers. The woman strongly objected to the remark, asserting that she is an Indian citizen and highlighting that linguistic differences should not be used to question someone’s nationality.

In the video circulating online, she is seen calmly but firmly responding to the allegations, stating that people from Tripura, Assam, and other northeastern states often speak Bengali with distinct regional variations while living and working across India.

Following the video’s circulation, social media users reacted strongly, with many condemning the alleged incident and expressing solidarity with the woman. A large section of users called the behavior discriminatory and inconsistent with the principles of equality and respect in a diverse country like India.

The incident has also reignited discussions about the challenges faced by people from the northeastern states, who have at times reported being subjected to prejudice based on language, appearance, or cultural identity in different parts of the country.

Civil society voices and commentators have emphasized the need for greater awareness and sensitivity toward India’s cultural and linguistic diversity. They have also urged accountability in cases involving alleged harassment or discrimination. The episode has sparked concern and anger in Tripura and other northeastern regions, with many stressing that every citizen should be treated with dignity irrespective of regional or linguistic background.
