Questions Raised Over TCA’s “Controversy-Free” Claim Amid Ongoing Disputes

Date:

Agartala,  2nd June 2026:  The distribution of 108 cricket kit bags to various clubs by the Tripura Cricket Association at Rabindra Bhawan on Tuesday has triggered fresh debate within the state’s cricket fraternity.

The programme was attended by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who praised the functioning of the association and stated that the Tripura Cricket Association was moving on an honest path and was free from controversy.

However, several former Ranji cricketers and cricket enthusiasts expressed surprise over the statement, alleging that a number of unresolved issues continue to surround the association.

One of the major points of contention relates to the recent process of admitting Life Members into the TCA. Last year, the association invited applications for 100 Life Membership positions and notified that if applications exceeded 100, only 100 applicants would be selected. According to sources, the total number of applicants was below the prescribed limit of 100.

Despite this, when the final list was published, only 81 individuals were granted Life Membership. Several applicants were reportedly excluded without any official explanation. Former cricketers have questioned the transparency of the selection process, particularly after an ex-Ranji team captain was allegedly denied Life Membership despite fulfilling the eligibility criteria.

Adding to the controversy, some cricket stakeholders have raised concerns regarding the clearance process for Life Membership applications. According to sources, certain office-bearers who themselves applied for Life Membership were also involved in approving applications, prompting allegations of conflict of interest.

An experienced former Ranji cricketer, speaking on condition of anonymity, questioned how officials who were applicants themselves could participate in the scrutiny and approval process of other applicants.

Meanwhile, another issue that has generated widespread discussion among cricket followers is the re-election of Tapan Lodh as President of the TCA.

Critics point out that the recommendations of the Lodha Committee, later upheld by the Supreme Court, prescribe an upper age limit of 70 years for office-bearers in the BCCI and its affiliated state associations. Under these regulations, individuals aged 70 years or above are ineligible to contest or hold office-bearer posts, serve on apex councils or governing bodies, and represent cricket boards at the national and international levels.

The developments have sparked renewed debate over governance, transparency and compliance with cricket administration norms within the Tripura Cricket Association. Cricket lovers and former players have called for greater transparency and clarity on the issues to maintain confidence in the administration of the sport in the state.
