Date:

Agartala, 29th June 2026:  In a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking, North Tripura Police seized 1.5 lakh Yaba tablets worth an estimated ₹7.5 crore during a routine vehicle checking operation at Damchhara Police Station. One alleged drug trafficker has been arrested in connection with the case.

North Tripura Superintendent of Police Abhinash Rai said the seizure marks another significant success in the state’s ongoing campaign to build a drug-free Tripura.

According to police, the operation was carried out on Sunday, June 28, at around 6:30 pm at a naka checkpoint in the Purba RK Pur area under Damchhara Police Station. During the routine inspection, police intercepted a suspicious vehicle bearing registration number ML05AA0644, which was attempting to enter Tripura from Assam.

Following due legal procedures, the vehicle was searched in the presence of the Executive Magistrate of Panisagar Subdivision, SDPO K. Shishodia, officials from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), and other police personnel. A specially designed concealed chamber inside the vehicle was discovered, from which 150,000 Yaba tablets were recovered.

The driver, identified as Anup Nuniya (23), a resident of Shilkuri under Silchar Police Station in Assam, was arrested on charges of drug trafficking.

SP Abhinash Rai said a case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and an investigation is underway to identify other members of the trafficking network and determine whether a larger interstate syndicate is involved.

The accused will be produced before the court on Monday along with the seized contraband.

The operation is being regarded as one of the biggest anti-narcotics successes in North Tripura in recent times. The seizure has drawn widespread appreciation from the public, with many praising the officers of Damchhara Police Station for preventing the illegal consignment from entering the state.
