Poor quality road repair work sparks allegations of corruption in Agartala

Date:

Agartala  20th July 2026:  Allegations of large-scale irregularities have surfaced over ongoing road repair works in the city, with residents accusing the Agartala Municipal Corporation and Smart City projects of carrying out development works in a careless manner.

The road stretch from Durga Chowmuhani to Barjala has remained in a deplorable condition for a long time. Commuters say the damaged road is not only causing severe damage to vehicles but has also created serious risks for pedestrians. Residents claim that the condition of the road is so bad that even carrying critical patients through this route has become extremely difficult.

According to locals, the road had not been properly repaired for the past two years, leading to further deterioration. Following a report by Syandan newspaper around two months ago, the contractor finally started repair work. However, residents have raised questions over the quality of the construction, fearing that the newly repaired road may not last even a month.

The concern intensified after visuals emerged showing workers laying hot bitumen on the road despite rainwater accumulated in potholes. When media personnel arrived to record the work, the bitumen was reportedly covered with plastic sheets. The contractor allegedly avoided appearing before the media.

Local residents have also raised allegations of financial irregularities and questioned whether the work is being carried out according to official standards. They claimed that the contractor was seen instructing workers to complete the work quickly after noticing media presence at the site.

Local businessmen and residents are now questioning the durability of the repair work and demanding accountability from the authorities. They allege that public money is being misused in the name of development, while poor-quality works continue without proper monitoring or investigation.

Residents have urged the concerned departments to inspect the project and ensure that road construction is carried out according to quality standards.
