Agartala: May 28. The families who were evicted from their land in Raiarbari at Udaipur and CPI(ML) state secretary Partha Karmakar has threatened to move to High Court against challenging the eviction process and demanded compensation for the family.

Addressing a press conference, Karmakar alleged that in December 1999, the victims were evicted from their land according to the MC Roy commission’s investigation and proposed recommendations in the case of the brutal attack by the NLFT terrorist group in Raiarbari.

“In 2003, 2004, due to lack of Khas land, unregistered forest land was rehabilitated. However, in 2019, these forest lands, which were occupied by the resettled people, were illegally settled by local communities. On this pretext, 7 families were mercilessly evicted with bulldozers by the forest department and state government on May 25. It is unethical, inhumane and illegal. The evicted families should be given justice and resettled with adequate compensation”, he said.

They have demanded to give justice to the affected families who were inhumanely evicted by the state government and should be given adequate compensation from Rs 5 lakh to 25 lakh to each family based on their losses.

“Such barbarous eviction, homelessness by the government without providing alternative resettlement is tantamount to deprivation of fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Justice must be done against this injustice. They shall not be evicted subject to alternative resettlement. An all-party political initiative should be taken by the State Government, District Administration and Forest Department to resolve this deliberately created conflict between local tribes and non-tribals. Necessary administrative initiatives should be taken to maintain harmony and goodwill between the tribal and Muslims”, he said.

He also said that provision of livelihood and security of life and property of homeless and proletarian families should be provided.

“We hope that the state government and Chief Minister, will consider our demands humanely and take necessary decisions to save the existence of these helpless families or else we will move to court”, he added.
