Agartala, July 31, 2023: The state committee of the Center of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) held a crucial meeting on Sunday, attended by representatives from every district. The meeting centered on discussing the current state of affairs and the condition of workers in the region. During the discussions, the committee highlighted their concerns about the decisions taken by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which were perceived as self-centered, resulting in hardships for the country and its people.
Speaking at a press conference held on Monday at the CITU state headquarters, Sankar Prasad Datta, the state general secretary, expressed apprehensions about the compromising of the country’s sovereignty under the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. One recent development that raised concern was the passing of a law in parliament to privatize the nation’s mineral resources. Additionally, the state government’s inadequate response to the dengue outbreak, leading to a rise in malaria cases in Longtharai Valley and Dhalai district, was also criticized.
Furthermore, the farmers’ distress over receiving unfair prices for their crops and the non-payment of wages to NREGA and TUEP workers were addressed. Despite promises made by the Left Front government, these issues remained unresolved even after 200 days, raising questions about the government’s commitment to the welfare of the marginalized sections of society.
In response to these challenges, the CITU has announced plans for a series of programs across the state in August. The program’s primary goal is to advocate for the rights and demands of workers from marginalized backgrounds. Datta revealed that conventions will be organized in various regions during this program, focusing on issues related to improved electricity services without privatization and safeguarding consumer rights. The government will also be urged to prioritize the enhancement of railway services alongside electricity services, as emphasized by the general secretary.
The press conference was attended by Manik De, the president of the CITU State Committee, who lent support to the organization’s initiatives aimed at addressing the concerns and needs of the workforce in the state.
